The theme of the 12th Annual Northeast ASCD Affiliate Conference is Leading and Learning: Educating the Whole child, Every Child. The strands for this year's conference are: Effective Instructional Practices, Leadership for Learning, and Professional Learning Communities
As in previous years, the conference is broken down into the main, two-day event (Friday and Saturday, December 5th and 6th, 2008) and an optional one-day pre-conference (Thursday, December 4th, 2008).
Each day of the conference will start off with a keynote presentation to set the tone and reflect upon current issues in Education.
This year our keynote presenters are Stephanie Pace Marshall and Tom Many.
Stephanie Pace Marshall, Founder & President Emerita, Illinois Science and Math Academy
Albert Einstein said that there are two ways to live our lives. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle. After over four decades working with and on behalf of children, the "way" for me has been quite clear - children often held and opened the portals to miracles. So, why is it that despite our commitment to their successful future, our children often leave school quite clear about what they cannot do, but unaware of their remarkable goodness and genius-- of the marvels they are? I believe it is because by design, they have been immersed in reductive, fragmented, prescriptive, uniform and competitive learning environments that mitigate against wholeness and do not invite all of who they are into learning. As leaders, we know what we need to do. It is now our time to change the conversation and create a new learning compact and covenant that transforms the story, map and landscape of learning and schooling so our children can emerge healthy and whole.
